A service/habitation inspection explained

During a caravan, motorhome or campervan service/habitation inspection, I will examine the integrity of all the critical components including the bodywork, ventilation, gas, water, and all electrical systems etc., which can help maintain your leisure vehicle and identify any problems early on and allow for prompt resolution.

It is well known that regular servicing/habitation inspections extend the life and the resale value of your leisure vehicle, this is because purchasers are more inclined to invest in a caravan, motorhome or campervan that has a good track record of being appropriately maintained.

Example: Caravan service breakdown

A caravan service can include approximately 60 aspects and may take approximately three to four hours to complete. In general, the following areas will be included:

  • Chassis and running gear, which includes the coupling head area, over-run inspection and re-grease, handbrake operation and adjustment, corner steady lubrication, tyre checks (including the spare wheel), brake adjustment with removal of wheels and brake drums, inspection and cleaning of brake shoes, beneath the caravan and jockey wheel inspection for damages and operation.

  • Electrical systems (both 240v and 12v systems), which includes an assessment of all internal and external lights, and plug sockets. Plus an assessment of fridge operation, consumer unit, TV socket, electric hob, microwave, the battery and any other device that requires electricity. A Residual Current Device is used to ensure the RCD trips within the required time. Furthermore, the Miniature Circuit Breakers and fuses are checked to ensure they are correct specification for the appliances.

  • Gas systems, which includes using a manometer to inspect for leaks in the gas supply system. All gas appliances, such as the oven, fridge, heating system and water heater, are turned on in order to check that they are operating as intended. All gas vents will be assessed to ensure they are clear and free from debris.

  • Water systems, which includes an inspection of all the taps to check for leaks and the waste water outlet is also assessed for any blockages. The toilet is also assessed to ensure that the valve seal is well lubricated and the battery-operated flush is working as intended.

  • Bodywork, includes an inspection of all doors, windows and blinds and a general assessment is made of the entire bodywork, including a visual inspection of the roof. A damp check is carried out around the entire inside of the caravan and recorded on a detailed damp report.

  • Ventilation, includes a thorough inspection of all roof lights to ensure that they operate as intended and all fixed vents are assessed for obstructions.

  • Fire & safety, includes testing and inspection of the smoke alarm and carbon monoxide detector to ensure they are functioning as intended and within expiry date. Fire extinguishers and or blankets will also be included in the inspection.

  • Fixtures & fittings, which includes an inspection of all internal cabinetry.
